Groups in town regularly organize cleanups, or "greenups," where community volunteers collect trash from places where it doesn't belong. Cleanups not only make the area more attractive but can help protect wildlife and humans by removing fishing line and other materials, and by keeping plastics out of our water supply. In addition to removing trash, some groups help remove invasive plants.
Friends of Whitehall typically holds a cleanup around the lake on a Saturday morning in the spring and fall.
The Hopkinton Trails Club coordinates monthly volunteer workdays on the trails in town, some of which are to remove invasive weeds which are killing trees in our forests.
The Lake Maspenock Preservation Association sponsors a cleanup at Sandy Beach each spring.
Groups of employees from Dell have cleaned up selected areas in our town.
Scout groups have organized greenups.
Hillers track and field and cross country teams have collected trash.
The Hopkinton Chinese Community turned out dozens of members to help with our committee's 2021 cleanup.
Our Department of Public Works performs significant work throughout the year helping to keep our town free of loose trash.
See the Events page to find out about upcoming cleanups and greenups.
If your group would like to organize such an event, we invite you to contact us for help or partnership.
Also, when you're on a walk or at an outdoor event, why not pick up a few items? Litter free areas tend to attract less additional litter. And by all means, spread to the word about proper trash disposal to children of all ages.
